Wyatt was a little boy with a big sense of adventure!

Alongside his little dog, a Windhound puppy named Wes, Wyatt spent almost every day exploring the forest behind his home.

Wyatt and Wes would play outside for hours. They loved to soak up the warm sunshine and smell the pretty flowers. Wyatt would even climb the trees to pick apples that he and Wes would share for lunch.

They had lots of fun when they played outside, but their favorite game of all was hide and seek.

To start the game, Wes the Windhound puppy laid down in the green grass and put his paws over his eyes while Wyatt rushed off to hide.

After a few moments, Wes peeked out from behind his paws.

The little pup looked curiously around and then sniffed the air. He stood and touched the tip of his wet nose to the ground before trotting through the trees after his best friend.

Wes was very good at hide and seek. No matter where Wyatt hid or how quiet Wyatt stayed or how little Wyatt moved, Wes always managed to find the boy eventually.

Making his way through the forest, Wes sniffed bristly bushes and peered up tall tree trunks, but he didn’t see Wyatt anywhere.

Wyatt must’ve found a very good hiding spot this time.

Suddenly, Wes heard something rustling behind him.

Wagging his tail, the Windhound puppy turned around to face the noise. At first, Wes just saw an overturned log. It was a big log with green moss draped over it. Sunlight danced on the dark bark.

Then, through a hole in the wood, Wes noticed a pair of familiar eyes gazing back at him.

Wyatt was hiding in the log!

Wes gave a short bark and wagged his tail happily. He’d managed to find Wyatt! Wyatt climbed out of the log and hugged his doggy friend with a laugh.

“You did great, Wes!” Wyatt said.

He petted the pup’s head lovingly and Wes gave the little boy a lick on the cheek.

The little boy dusted off his knees before giving a surprised gasp.

“Look!” whispered Wyatt.

Wyatt stuck out a finger and pointed through the trees deeper into the forest.

Wes curiously gazed in the direction that Wyatt pointed.

There, sitting very still and very alone, was a small family of white bunny rabbits.

“A mommy bunny and two babies,” Wyatt said softly.

The boy didn’t want to scare the rabbits away. They were very sweet looking bunnies with snow-white fur and pink noses. The two babies were huddled up close to their mother.

Just like Wyatt and Wes watched the bunnies, the bunnies gazed right back at the little boy and the little dog. The bunnies didn’t make any move to run away.

Both Wes and Wyatt could tell immediately that the rabbit family needed help with something.

The Windhound puppy looked up at Wyatt, who nodded. Then, the two began to walk toward the rabbits. The little boy and the little dog moved very slowly so that they wouldn’t frighten the bunnies.

When he was close enough, Wes gave the bunnies a light sniff and then looked up at his best friend. Even though Wyatt was a little boy and Wes was a little dog, they had a special way of communicating with one another. It was like they could read each other’s minds sometimes.

“This little bunny family needs a home,” announced Wyatt.

Wes gave an approving woof.

It wouldn’t do for the baby bunnies not to have a safe spot to lay their heads down at night. Wes and Wyatt both knew how much they loved their cozy home and their warm bed, so it was only right that the bunnies might have one too.

Wyatt bent down on his knees so that he was closer to the bunnies.

The mother bunny lifted her head and perked up her floppy white ears. Her nose twitched curiously.

“Don’t worry, Mrs. Bunny,” Wyatt said. “We’re going to make you a beautiful home for you and your babies!”

The mother bunny’s pink nose wiggled in gratitude.

With that, Wyatt and Wes dutifully set off.

First, they had to find the best spot for the bunnies to live.

Wyatt wanted it to be near the water, so the bunnies would have plenty to drink and they could listen to the nice bubbling of the cool blue river. He found just the right space off the bank of a nearby stream, which also had a blooming bed of wildflowers.  With the flowers so close, the bunnies would wake up to the sweet fragrance every morning.

It was perfect!

After deciding that would be just the place for the bunnies’ home, the little boy and the little dog spent the next few hours searching for sturdy sticks to build a little bunny house. It took a very long time and was very hard work, but neither Wyatt nor Wes complained for a minute. Eventually, they’d crafted a lovely little home from the strong sticks. Inside, they also laid a blanket of soft leaves.

By the time they finished constructing the bunnies’ home, the sun was going down.

The sky was getting dark and the forest was getting quiet. Wind whistled very softly through the treetops and the moon’s silver light peeked through the leaves. It was a very calm night.

When Wyatt and Wes led the bunnies to their new home, the mother bunny took her babies inside and then poked her head out again to look at the little boy and the little dog.

Wes sniffed her and the mother bunny lightly brushed her pink nose against the puppy’s. Wes’s tail wagged once more.

The bunnies were very pleased with their home!

Wes grinned from ear to ear. He was exhausted from the long day, but also very happy because he’d helped the bunny family.

“Have a good night, Mrs. Bunny!” said Wyatt. “We’ll see you again soon!”

He lightly stroked the bunny’s head before he and Wes began to walk back to their house.

When they returned, the two best friends were very tired. Their footsteps dragged and their eyes had trouble staying open. The little boy and his little dog had a very big day and had made a very big difference in the little bunnies’ lives.

They cleaned up and then collapsed on Wyatt’s bed. Their blankets were soft and warm and their pillow was cool.

Their eyes drifted shut as the crickets outside sang their song. The little boy and the little dog curled up together, ready for the big dreams they would have that night, and the big adventures that would come tomorrow.
